Photographing birds in flight is one of the toughest skills to master in wildlife photography, and there are some tried and tested methods of rising to what is a considerable challenge.

To begin I’m going to quote an old cliché: practice makes perfect! And in this case, it really does. This is one of those camera techniques that becomes easier the more you try it. So, first of all, get yourself down to one of the many public falconries or birds of prey centres. You’ll find several great subjects and the public displays you’ll encounter there will come with the advantage that you will know exactly where the birds will take off and land. This predictable flight path means you can concentrate on getting one of the most important technical skills licked – and that’s focus.
